The Brights Way

The world is changing faster than ever and the need to learn has never been bigger. Rapidly shifting skills needs create a tremendous challenge for companies, individuals and society. To succeed we need to adapt, to adapt we need to change and to change we need to learn.

To meet the challenge, a revolution is needed. A shift from degrees to flexible skills development. From choosing one path in early adulthood to a lifetime of opportunities. In short: shifting focus from education to learning.

As a part of this revolution, we must rethink the ways we look at learning. Learning needs to be more effective, more hands-on, clearly measurable and better embedded into working life.

The Brights Way is built to solve these challenges. It is our manifesto summarizing our approaches to learning. It consists of five elements: Motivation states the foundation needed for learning, Return on learning explains how we create learning that has an impact, Learning at Brights describes our ways of working, Learning Embedded states our views on lifelong learning and, finally, Learning innovation dives into how we work with EdTech and constant development of this manifesto and our methods.

All our learning solutions are created based on The Brights Way. It guides everything we do and helps clarify to our clients, learners and ourselves, what it takes to make learning effective. It is the core in reaching our mission to change the way individuals and organizations learn.

1. Motivation

Motivation has a massive impact on learning – when something sparks your interest, you are more likely to put effort and enthusiasm into it. That is why at Brights everything starts with motivation.

Sparking and enhancing motivation in adult learners starts with creating an understanding of why, what, and how to learn. When the learners can clearly picture themselves benefiting from the new skills and know that the things they learn will go to use and open new doors, it’s easier for them to both get and stay motivated.

Knowing the impact motivation has on learning, The Brights Way is designed to build and strengthen motivation, as you will see when reading further: our Backward Design approach and focus on Learning Outcomes allow us to draw a clear path towards the new skills, our measuring and feedback processes help to reflect, our teachers are trained to motivate and, finally, our learning methods make sure learning is hands-on, collaborative and fun. This way we make sure the fire keeps burning throughout the learning journey.

2. Return on Learning

The average learner forgets 80 % of the newly acquired knowledge in only two days after learning it. Quite shocking, but true.

At Brights we fight these odds in everything we do. To be certain that our solutions bring value to both the learners and organizations, we focus on securing Return on Learning – in other words, we don’t build trainings for trainings' sake, but build learning solutions that will have a concrete effect on both individuals and organizations. We want to make sure that the time and money invested in learning is worth it.

To reach this goal, we work with Backward Design and Learning Outcomes.

Backward Design challenges the traditional ways of building an education and shifts the focus from what should be in the curriculum to what concrete skills and knowledge need to be acquired by the end of the learning cycle.

Backward Design starts with identifying the client’s needs and creating concrete goals called Learning Outcomes. Learning Outcomes are the backbone around which each training is built. They also provide the framework for measuring progress and securing results.

Backward Design, Learning Outcomes and the focus on Return on Learning are at the very core of how we unlock brilliance in both individuals and organizations.

3. Learning at Brights

To make sure the Learning Outcomes are reached, we have developed unique ways of working that consist of approaches and methods proven to deliver results and unlock brilliance in our learners.

Learning at Brights is all about learning efficiently, learning by doing and working together with others to learn. We emphasize the importance of feedback and reflection to own your learning progress and get the best out of the learning experience. Also, clear structure, assessment process and working with top-class teachers with a work-life-focused approach are key factors in learning the Brights Way.

The approaches and methods collected here are greater than the sum of their parts. Our learners do not only learn the skills in question, but also develop crucial power skills like communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking – skills that empower them throughout life.

Creating the space for learning

For learning to happen, we need to create fruitful circumstances for it. We call this the space for learning and it consists of creating a safe atmosphere as well as a clear structure to support the learners.

Learning means taking chances and making mistakes. This requires a safe atmosphere without judgment or fear of failing. The atmosphere should give energy and encourage learners to take the step out of their comfort zone.

Brights learning environment, whether at the campus or online, is a space where learners can try, make mistakes and progress, work hard, use all their abilities and learn while having fun with other learners. This atmosphere is created jointly by the learners, teachers and Brights learning specialists dedicated to building an open, caring, engaging learning environment.

We know that a clear structure and sense of direction create a great space for learning. That is why we follow a set of activities and processes that enables us, our teachers, and learners to prepare, follow up and support the learning journeys the best way with Learning Outcomes in focus.

Whether designing a training week, a day or one single lesson, we always follow a clear framework. That guarantees that no matter what, where or how the learning happens, the same focus on the key success factors remains and learning at Brights feels the same and leads to results, no matter the context.

Methods that make a difference

Accelerated learning

We have been inspired by the accelerated learning model. The model highlights the importance of activating the whole brain when engaging in learning, combining fast and focused teaching with activity.

We work with short lectures followed by an instant activity. At Brights, we never get stuck in hour-long presentations – we engage our learners, which allows deep and efficient learning. This requires an engaged attitude from the learner as well as teachers, who know how to facilitate the learning process in an engaging way.

Action Learning

Action Learning is all about learning by doing. Learning at Brights is built around solving real-life problems, making mistakes and trying again rather than memorizing. Trying, failing, understanding what you don’t know yet, searching for more information, trying again and practicing – that’s when learning happens.

Action learning is learning through the process of doing. We create tasks and projects that reflect the real world and connect it to relevant situations or innovations on the market.

Action learning not only helps to learn, but it also smoothens the transition into using the newly acquired skills and develops valuable power skills.

Collaborative Learning

Collaboration between people levels the learning and offers new insights. Therefore, collaboration is a given at Brights. Our learners work in group projects, peer reviews, pair co-working, mentorships as well as feedback sessions. Learning is a joint mission: when learning together, our learners not only learn from each other but also deepen their knowledge when helping others.

Alongside learning new skills, working closely together offers a brilliant setting for becoming better at power skills such as communication, critical thinking and learning how to learn. Furthermore, being a part of a learning community sparks the joy of learning.

Feedback & Reflection

We know the importance of feedback and reflection for growing and learning. That is why they are an integral part of our ways of working.

The methods we use – Accelerated Learning, Action Learning, and Collaborative Learning – all make space for feedback and reflection naturally in everyday activities. But knowing the importance of reflection, that is not enough. That’s why all Brights trainings have feedback and reflection built in into the structure of the training, for example through reflection tasks or having follow-up discussions. Also, all assessments are followed by feedback to support future learning and growth.

When working with feedback and reflection, we are guided by the approach of Growth Mindset. Growth Mindset is a perspective on learning, highlighting that individuals who believe their talents can be developed through hard work, reflection, and input from others, learn more. We support our learners in embracing Growth Mindset and encourage them to believe in their abilities, which contributes to creating motivation and commitment.

Assessment process

To support our learners and ensure Return on learning, we have developed effective ways to assess progress during a learning journey.

Having regular, practice-oriented checkpoints helps our learners understand the learning process as well as encourages and equips them to take ownership of their learning. If you pass a checkpoint, you are ready for the next step, if not, you get the chance to understand how to get there. Feedback and clarity boost motivation and help us at Brights to offer the right support.

Just like everything else in our learning journeys, our checkpoints are also based on Learning Outcomes. This ensures that when measuring learning, we measure the right things. After finishing a learning journey and all its checkpoints, we are able to tell how well the Learning Outcomes were achieved. Just like Learning Outcomes, checkpoints and other assessment methods are tailored to meet our clients' needs.

Work-life oriented teachers

Our teachers play a significant role in sparking motivation and learning in our trainings. Our methods give empower them to facilitate learning and coach our learners to be real world- and work ready!

We work with an extensive Teacher Community that consists of experts with a combination of theory and work-life knowledge. With our methods and approaches, our teachers are able to facilitate effective learning and make sure that when it’s time to put the new skills into use at work, our learners are ready.

When joining Brights, our teachers are introduced to The Brights Way to be able to create the training, deliver materials and teach in our ways, naturally with the support from Brights learning experts.

4. Learning Embedded

Learning has no beginning nor an end. Some call this lifelong learning, but to make it more concrete, we call this approach Learning Embedded.

Learning Embedded has two levels. On the organizational level it means finding ways to make learning better integrated into working life. We at Brights help companies develop learning strategies and find ways to make learning happen every day instead of here and there.

On the individual level, Learning Embedded means learning things that are below the surface. It can be a tool you learn when doing exercises or a power skill you strengthen while working on a group project. However, the most important thing we embed to all our learning solutions is the number one skill in the changing world: learning how to learn. This is possible thanks to our carefully selected methods and the focus on reflection.

Approaching learning from the perspective of it being embedded, both organizations and individuals can better navigate the new competitive landscape where change is the only constant.

5. Learning Innovation

At Brights, Learning Innovation stands for our constant quest to innovate on how and when we learn as well as our drive to use technology and innovation to maximize learning.

Our Edtech solutions enable us to get the best out of the methods we use. The effectiveness of EdTech depends on the quality of the methods behind it – that's why our methods and EdTech solutions can’t exist separately.

Learning innovation also captures how we approach change: we embrace it. The Brights Way is not meant to stay the same forever. Since 2015, it has developed based on our clients’ and learners’ needs. We make changes as we learn and work with learning analytics and data. This is possible through measuring learning, evaluating our learning solutions and collecting data.
